Your CV is very important as it is your first opportunity to market
your skills and demonstrate your suitability for the role. Your Job
History, Achievements and Skills molded into a document that someone
will spend approximately 30 seconds to a minute initially, to look at.
Therefore you need to make sure that it’s clear, concise and that
your potential employer can see the benefit you can add to their business
in an instant.
Use this guideline for writing a CV to help you get the position you want. Remember that you must stay focused on the employer and their needs throughout this process.
The Header
This section should include your name, address, a contact number and email address. (Ideally something with your full name as it sounds more professional).
Summary Objective and Profile Statement
Make these as specific to the requirements of the role as possible. Highlight how your experience will meet the employers’ needs.
Skills summary
In this section include all your main skills. Place the ones most relevant to the current position applying for at the top. Only use key words in this section, you will have the opportunity to really demonstrate how your skills can aid your potential employers in the next section.
Employment History/ Experience
Start with your most recent position first and work back chronologically. Don’t include every position you have ever had if you’ve been working for twenty years just go back to when you feel your work experience stops being relevant to the position you are applying for.
The description for your most current role should be the most in depth, the positions prior to this you can be briefer about. Make sure wherever possible you demonstrate how your prior experience fits the needs of the employer you aiming to work for.
Education and Training
In this section you should include all of your education from High/ Secondary school onwards. If you have professional training & certifications only include the ones that are relevant.
